NEW DELHI: Jamia Millia Islamia has set May 15, 2027, as the deadline for approving and implementing its students’ union constitution and decided to revoke disciplinary action against protesting students. The university has also decided to hold students’ union elections within six weeks of the commencement of the next academic session, addressing three key demands raised by students during their 18-day protest seeking the restoration of the elected union, which has remained defunct since 2006.A student said the university had accepted all three demands, including a fixed deadline for implementing the constitution, an election schedule and the withdrawal of disciplinary proceedings against protesters.“Order has come in, it covers 3 points: 1) The approval and implementation of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union Constitution shall be completed by 15th May, 2027. We had demanded a date and they have announced a date, 2) The elections shall be conducted within 6 weeks of the start of the academic session, that is approximately within 6 weeks from 16 July 2027, 3) All disciplinary actions (taken against protesting students) will be revoked. They have accepted all 3 of our demands…We are calling off our hunger strike and protest…”The decision comes amid mounting tensions on campus over the demand for the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU). Students had continued their agitation despite an earlier university order stating that elections would be held within 15 days of the approval of the union’s constitution. They had questioned the absence of a deadline for approving the constitution.

The administration had also initiated disciplinary proceedings against students during the agitation. On October 27, the provost of Begum Hazrat Mahal Girls’ Hostel issued a show-cause notice to a student for allegedly obtaining emergency leave on misleading grounds and participating in the protest. The student was asked to submit a written explanation within 24 hours. The university has extended online classes until November 24 and shifted odd-semester examinations to online mode, citing the prevailing campus situation and concerns over students’ safety and security.
