India reaffirms Ladakh status as China says it doesn’t recognise the UT

Diplomatic tensions flared again between India and China after Beijing strongly opposed India’s decision to officially map and standardise 28 places in Ladakh, including some in Aksai China, and reaffirmed that it does not recognise the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh. In a swift rebuttal, New Delhi reiterated no amount of Chinese denial can change the established fact that the Ladakh UT is an integral and inalienable part of India.According to the ministry of home affairs (MHA), which announced the standardisation in a press release on October 2, identifying the places/ geographical features formally on the Survey of India map was aimed at facilitating their accurate recognition and better awareness among the public at large. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reiterated the same, saying the MHA statement was self-explanatory.“The announcement mentions that the twenty-eight (28) places/features located in the UT of Ladakh have been identified with standard place and feature names on the official map of Survey of India, and it has been done in consultation with the Union Territory of Ladakh and local stakeholders,” he said. The Chinese foreign ministry described the Indian move as illegal saying it doesn’t change the fact that the western sector of the China-India boundary belongs to China. “China has never recognized the so-called Union Territory of Ladakh unilaterally and illegally established by India, and firmly opposes the so-called standardized names publicised by India,” said spokesperson Mao Ning. However, China itself has renamed places in Arunachal Pradesh on at least half a dozen occasions in the past 10 years, including twice in 2026, to reinforce its claim over the Indian state. The fresh cartographic tussle comes in the middle of the ongoing normalisation of the bilateral relationship after a military standoff in eastern Ladakh. The Chinese response was a throwback to its statement in 2019 – a day after India revoked the special status of J&K in 2019 – accusing New Delhi of undermining China’s territorial sovereignty by unilaterally changing its domestic law and establishing Ladakh UT.“Such practice is unacceptable and will not come into force,” it had then said, warning India to exercise prudence in words and deeds on the boundary question. It was perhaps no coincidence that the military conflict in eastern Ladakh started 8 months later.Beijing maintains that it has always opposed India’s inclusion of “Chinese territory in the western sector of the China-India boundary into its administrative jurisdiction”.
